I cannot find figure 4.8 on the Biology 2 nd edition Multimedia Companion I want to transfer the audio CD to my iTunes When opening the course I see the HTML code I receive an error message when I attempt to play videos OR when watching an animation or video sound plays but video doesn't. My CD won't run on my MAC. Media Player Problems Bad File Association Includes Movies play but animations won't Animations play but movies won't Sound stops part way through Says it is downloading codec but doesn't come down Get error "Active X Viewer not installed" Missing plug-in You can test to see if the problem is not having an association with Media Player by doing the following: Double-click on My Computer from the desktop. Right-click over the CD-Rom drive which has the CD in it and choose Find or Search. In the Named or Search for files or folders named box type .wav;.mpg;*.avi. Make sure Include Subfolders or Search Options|Advanced|Search Subfolders is checked. When the list of files appears double-click on one file of each type and make sure it appears in Media Player. You can correct the association by doing the following: For Windows XP: Open Windows Media Player. This can be done either by going to Start>Run and entering wmplayer or from the All Programs Menu Press the keys Alt+T on your keyboard. This will open a tools menu Select Options Select the File Types Tab Click the button that says Select All Click Apply then click Ok and close Windows Media Player The videos should now play For Windows Vista: Click on Start in the bottom left corner of the screen and go to Default Programs. Select "Set Program Access and Computer Default". Choose a configuration - select Custom(click the double arrow beside custom). Scroll down the list and under choose default media player, select windows media player. click OK. The videos should now play. Sound and/or video compression is not installed Includes: Cannot play back the video stream: no suitable decompressor was found Video portion plays but sound doesn't Sound plays but video doesn't To fix this sound and video compression needs to be installed. To add all the default codecs in Windows, follow these steps: In Control Panel , double-click Add/Remove Programs . On the Windows Setup tab, click Multimedia or Sounds and Multimedia, and then click Details . Click the Audio Compression and Video Compression check boxes to select them, and then click OK . Click OK . A gray box comes up instead of the table of contents Be sure Internet Explorer is NOT running. Click on the Start button. Choose Settings. Choose Control Panel. Double-click on Internet Options. Click the Settings button within Temporary Internet Files on the first tab. Click the View Files button. Click the Name column heading. If the name column heading does not appear then click View|Details. Scroll down the list of files and delete anything that starts with the letters ecb (do this by placing your pointer over the name of the file and clicking with your right mouse button, then put your pointer over the word Delete on the menu that appears, then click using your left mouse button, then click the Yes button on the message that appears). Close the window you are in by clicking the X in the upper right hand corner. Cancel the two dialog boxes. Start the course. Navigate to a page by selecting it from the table of contents. Immediately exit the course. Start the course again. Set your test answer password again using the procedure you used when you set it the first time. If the above procedure did not fix the problem, try this one: Start Internet Explorer From the view menu choose Java Console. If Java Console is not listed on the menu then: From the Tools menu choose Internet Options Click on the Advanced Tab Find the setting Java Console Enabled (requires restart) and check it Exit Internet Explorer Start Internet Explorer A small window with Java Console in the title area should appear. If it does not then your operating system has a problem. This problem is NOT caused by the course. Most likely a program has been installed which has corrupted the Java feature of your operating system. Many times this can be fixed by installing an updated Java system. You can download a program to do this at http://www.highschoolscience.com/cdfaq/msjavx86.exe . Run the program and when your computer restarts the table of contents should appear. Error "You do not have the appropriate license" This error occurs when the Print Testing Materials button is pressed. Click the Start button. Choose Find|Files or Folders or Search|For Files or Folders In the Named or Search textbox for files or folders named box type tx32.dll. In the Look In text box be sure it says just c:\ (for example NOT c:\my documents). If you have an option to check all local harddrives, choose that. Make sure Include Subfolders or Search Options|Advanced|Search Subfolders is checked. Choose Find Now or Search Now. If a file is found then determine where it is located. If it is not located in c:\windows, c:\winnt, c:\windows\system, or c:\winnt\system then you should be able to figure out the program causing the difficulty. If it is a program you do not use or need then on the start button choose Settings|Control Panel|Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the program. Problems when Netscape is the browser opened by the Multimedia Companion CD Netscape is sometimes unable to launch multimedia files correctly. The only solution to this problem is to use Microsoft Internet Explorer to view the content of the CD. If you do not have Microsoft Internet Explorer, you can install it from the CD. If you still want Netscape to be your default browser, you will need to obtain a script file to create a shortcut by one of the following means: Download from mkshrt.src Contact Apologia Educational Ministries and have them email the file to you Contact Apologia Educational Ministries and have them send the file to you via postal mail. When you obtain the script you should save or copy it to the c:\ directory, then click the Start buttons, choose run, and type the following command: cscript c:\mkshrt.src //e:vbs This will place a shortcut on your desktop to run the program. You will need to close the initial screen that appears when you insert the CD Run time error "File not found" when pressing Start the Course This error occurs if your registry does not contain the correct information for Internet Explorer. This problem can be corrected by following this procedure: Download the file from findie.bat Choose Open or Run when asked whether you want to open/run or save the file. If you are warned about a security problem you should allow the entire operation once. A black window will open and display messages. When finished the window should say "Patch applied" and "Finished! Press any key to close this window". The error should no longer appear. Findie file to fix runtime error says access denied and or cannot find c:\findie.src This error occurs if you are not logged on to XP as a user with administrative privileges. You need to log on as a user with administrative privileges to run the file. Start page is now Highschoolscience.com instead of what I used to have Be sure Internet Explorer is NOT running. Click on the Start button. Choose Settings. Choose Control Panel. Double-click on Internet Options. On the first tab type the address you want to be your start page in the Home page section. Other Problems Most other problems are caused by having the incorrect version of Internet Explorer installed or not using Internet Explorer to view the course or CD. You can determine the version of Internet Explorer by doing the following: Start the CD. When the course or multimedia page starts click on the Help menu. Choose About from the menu. Note the version number. If it is not Internet Explorer 5.00.3105.0106IC or later (a higher number) then you some things will not work correctly. You can correct this problem by installing the Internet Explorer included on the CD. When printing, table of contents prints, not the text This problem is caused by the table of contents frame having the focus and either clicking the printer icon on the toolbar or choosing File|Print and saying to print only the selected frame. The easiest way to print the contents of the course frame is to right-click with the mouse over the text you wish to print and left-click print on the menu that pops up. If print is not a selection (it is grayed out) then you are most likely over a link or a picture. Try moving to the very top or very bottom of the page and right-clicking again. A white box appears in the left pane instead of the table of contents An Install on Demand message for Java Virtual Machine appears when starting the course I receive an error about about not finding an object when starting the course All of these problems are because the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine is not installed. To install it follow these steps Be sure Internet Explorer is not running Click the Start button, usually located in the lower left-hand corner of the desktop Choose Run or Run Program Type d:\bin\support\vm\msjavx86.exe where d: is the drive letter of your CDRom drive where the cd is inserted Follow the instructions to install and reboot the computer Run-time error 367 when trying to Print Testing Materials This problem is caused by not being logged in as an administrator under WindowsXP. You must either log in as an administrator or give your account administrator privileges. In Biology Module 8 the On Your Own after Punnett squares doesn't work right There is a problem on the CD with this question. Download this file to view the question and answer. In Biology Module 8 the On Your Own after Pedigree doesn't allow you to click next Use the table of contents to navigate to the next section entitled More Complex Genetic Crosses In Module 16 the Next button displays two message boxes you have to click Ok on Click the Ok button on both the messages. This bug will be fixed in the next release. I bought the chemistry multimedia companion but it says Biology when the CD starts It doesn't matter how many times you proofread a product before shipping, something always seems to get missed. Hopefully, it isn't in big bold letters at the top of the first thing the customer sees when using it! Honest, the cd is the multimedia companion for Exploring Creation with Chemistry. The lazy programmer copied and pasted and obviously missed changing the course name. He also mis-spelled the word "course" on the first CD Apologia produced, but we gave him another chance. Now we are forced to keep him on because he is the only one who has a truck to put the owner's jet skis in and out of the lake. If you think we should still punish him use the contact page to send a message asking that he be fired, scolded, or required to sing the periodic chart of the elements. When I click on an animation or movie on the Physical Science full course CD it just pronounces the word There are three items with this problem. Here are instructions for working around this problem: Mercury movie Click on the start menu Choose Run type mplayer2 d:\crs\mercury.mpg replacing d: with the drive letter of your cd rom Click Ok Alpha animation Click on the start menu Choose Run type mplayer2 d:\crs\alpha.avi replacing d: with the drive letter of your cd rom Click Ok Beta animation Click on the start menu Choose Run type mplayer2 d:\crs\beta.avi replacing d: with the drive letter of your cd rom Click Ok When I click on Start the Course I get an error "Could not go to specified URL" Press CTRL+SHIFT+7 Find a folder named Internet Explorer and double-click on it Find a file named iexplore or iexplore.exe and double-click on it You will now find a shortcut on the desktop which will start the course when it is double-clicked When attempting to view the course Internet Explorer gives me an error message stating that active content cannot be displayed The following file will make the necessary changes to allow Active Content coming from the CD-ROM only to be displayed Download the file AXCC.exe Select Open when the download dialog appears The program will run automatically. When it has finished it will give you a message that all of the necessary changes have been made. If you notice any adverse effects from running this you can revert back to the original state by running the uninstall program located at C:\AEM If you do not feel comfortable running the uninstall then call 888-524-4724 for technical assistance. When I click on Start the Course I get an error "Error in Script on Page. Line: 1 Char:1 URL:" The following error can be caused by several possibilities. If the URL has mywebsearch in it then the error is caused by the MyWebSearch bar. MyWebSearch is an "enhancement" to Internet Explorer. The program can easily be uninstalled through the Add/Remove Programs under Control Panel. If the URL says index.html or index.htm then use the following steps: Click on No to return to the menu from the error message. Press and hold the keys CTRL-SHIFT-7. This will open a window titled Program Files. Go to the Internet Explorer folder. Double-click on the Internet Explorer folder to open it. Inside this folder is a file titled iexplore.exe. Double-click this file. You will then be returned to the menu. Close the menu and get to the Desktop. Once the Desktop is up there wil be a shortcut titled AEM (coursename). This shortcut will take you straight into the course thus bypassing the menu and error message I am unable to access the bookextras website Use one of the following links: http://www.apologia.com/bookextras http://www.highschoolscience.com/bookextras The table of contents on my Full course CD-ROM is for Biology, but I don't own Biology. If the procedure above doesn't work, please do the following procedure for each of the following types: .avi .wav .mpg .mpeg Open Control Panel. Then go to Programs and click Make a file type always open in a specific program. Alternatively, in the Classic View, open Default Programs and then click Associate a file type or protocol with a program. In the Set Associations folder, locate and highlight a file type by extension or protocol, and then click on Change Program button. An Open With window will appear. Choose a program to open the kind of file from the list of programs available. By default, Recommended Programs is automatically expanded. However, there is more detected programs in the section of Other Programs, which can be expanded to select by clicking on Down Arrow at the end of the separator line. If the program that want to used as the default program does not found, click Browse to select an executable file manually. I receive an error message about a corrupted file. First, open My Computer. This can be found either on your Desktop or in the Start menu. For Windows Vista it is just titled Computer Find the drive starting with the label AEM_ Right-click over the drive and select Open (not Open Autorun) For Companion CDs open the folder titled MM. For Full Course CDs open the folder titled CRS For Companion CDs open the folder titled Mod01. For Full Course CDs. For either CD open any file with the title fig_ If this file plays properly then you will need to contact your computer manufacturer for support with this issue. If the file does not play properly then please try the video files below. These files are provided by Microsoft. SAMPLE.AVI WNDSURF1.AVI These files are from the Cds fig5_4.avi scientia.wav If these videos do not play properly either then you will need to contact your computer manufacturer for support with this issue. The audio plays but the video does not This issue is caused by OEM versions of Vista. The following will fix the problem. Download and run the file from here. My CD won't run on my MAC. Insert the CD in the drive. An icon will appear on the desktop, named aem_ followed by mnemonic for the course. Double-click the icon. Double-click on the index.html file. Choose the link to view the course contents.
